SQUASHED!

I’m a little disappointed with my garden harvest this year. Usually we have bags and bags of tomatoes. I’m usually trying to get rid of my over abundance of eggplants and green peppers. And right about this time of year, I’m usually so sick of zucchini that I can barely stand to look at it. But not this year. This year has been a very small harvest. Some blame the weather, but I know the real culprit. The butternut squash.

Grape

This was awful and awesome at the same time just like was. (Interesting story about Doug: He hates watermelon now because of a watermelon eating contest gone bad when he was a kid.) Have you ever seen that old cartoon called Grape Ape? Well, this is exactly how this tasted. Imagine any artificially grape-flavored thing ever made and that’s what this was like. Grape jelly, grape cough syrup, grape drink, grape candy, grape Popsicles, etc. So if you like that flavor, you’ll love this! I gave it 4 spoons, Aya and Doug gave it 2 spoons.

Custard

This was a big disappointment. I was expecting the taste of a custard donut filling, but it didn’t taste like much of anything. It didn’t taste bad. I just couldn’t think of anything it tasted like. I felt blank. Aya loved it and gave it 5 spoons. Doug and I gave it 3 spoons.

Pumpkin

With the fall-like weather we’ve been having, this was an appropriate flavor to try this week. I love pumpkin-flavored things. Pancakes, muffins, donuts, pudding, creme brulee, ravioli and PIE. And when it comes to sweets, anything pumpkin flavored is usually pumpkin pie flavor. This flavor kept to its word. Pumpkiny, spicy and ice creamy.  It’s a good combination. Doug and I gave it 5 spoons, and Aya gave it 4. I highly recommend you grab a pumpkin cone (or a cup) to enjoy as we enter fall.

IT’S GARDEN THYME!

I plant a garden at my house every year. Every year I always have big plans.

This year I’m going to stake my tomato plants early so they don’t fall over. This year I’m going to properly space the zucchini plants so they don’t crowd everything else. This year I’m going to weed my garden on a regular basis so they don’t overtake my yard. This year I’m going to water my garden. I don’t know what my problem is. You’d think after six years that I’d get something right.

LATE NIGHT STEAK N’ SHAKE

When we go to visit our friends in Kentucky, there is always a group that heads out to the Waffle House.  It’s my thing.  I love the Waffle House and make it my mission to go there at least once while we are down there.  But we don’t have those here in Michigan so going to the IHOP was suggested.  I offered to take anybody who wanted to go.  Most everybody was tired except for the kids.  “Really!?  You’re serious?”  I said , let’s go.  So at midnight on a Saturday night I took Max, Abby, Matthew, and Sara.  Sara wasn’t part of the original group to go, but when she heard we were going, I’ve never seen someone so excited to go to the IHOP.  “I wanna go, I wanna go!

WHAT’S COOKIN’?

I’m no stranger to the kitchen. Before we had a kid, my wife and I both cooked. I’d say she did the majority of it, but I still did a couple times a week. When I cooked, I rarely followed recipes. For some reason, I don’t like following directions. I prefer to fumble, trip and fall, and figure it out on my own instead of reading instructions. Not always, but most often.
